Roblox is rolling out a major overhaul of how it handles accounts for users under 16. Starting in June, the platform will introduce two new age-based account types — Roblox Kids and Roblox Select — designed to more closely match the content and communication settings available to a user’s actual age.
This is the biggest structural change Roblox has made to its account system in years, and it affects tens of millions of younger players on the platform.
Roblox Kids: For Ages 5 to 8
The Roblox Kids account tier is designed for the platform’s youngest users — those between five and eight years old, as verified through Roblox’s global age-check technology or by a parent confirming their child’s age.
Key features of Roblox Kids accounts:
- Access limited to games with a Minimal or Mild content maturity label that have passed Roblox’s three-step selection process
- All communication is disabled by default. Children in this tier cannot chat with other users unless a parent explicitly turns on the feature
- The app interface displays a distinct background color to make the account type immediately visible
- Games are drawn from a dynamically updated catalog curated specifically for this age group
Roblox Select: For Ages 9 to 15
The Roblox Select account tier covers users aged nine to fifteen, again verified through age-check or parental confirmation.
Key features of Roblox Select accounts:
- Access to games with content maturity labels up to and including Moderate, after passing Roblox’s additional selection process
- Default communication settings remain unchanged from the current experience for this age group
- Games go through developer verification, extended content evaluation, and additional limits on content more suited to older audiences
What About Users Who Haven’t Done an Age Check?
Users who have not yet completed an age check will be temporarily limited to games rated Minimal or Mild, and all communication will be unavailable. Once they complete the age check, they will automatically move into the appropriate account tier.
Users who are age-checked at 16 or older will see no change to their Roblox experience.
Why Roblox Is Making This Change
Roblox has been under significant pressure over child safety. A wave of lawsuits and growing media attention around predatory behavior in the platform’s chat system accelerated the timeline for these changes. The platform has over 150 million daily active users, and a substantial portion of them are children.
The age-based account system brings together age checks, content ratings, developer verification, and parental controls into a single unified framework — something Roblox’s existing system lacked. Parental Controls Are Also Expanding
Alongside the account tiers, Roblox is expanding its parental controls to give parents more direct oversight. Parents will be able to review and adjust their child’s account settings, including turning communication on or off for Roblox Kids accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts launch?
Both new account types are expected to launch in early June 2026.

Will kids lose access to their favorite games?
Roblox has stated it believes the vast majority of games that users under 16 already play will be available in the appropriate tier at launch, based on the selection criteria. However, some games may not make the initial curated catalog.
Does this affect Roblox on PS5?
Yes. The account-tier system applies across all platforms, including the newly launched Roblox native PS5 app.
A More Structured Roblox Is Coming
The launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select in June marks a significant maturation of the platform’s approach to child safety. Whether it is enough to address the deeper concerns around predatory behavior and moderation is a separate question — but the structural changes are real, and they are coming soon.
