YouTube Rolling Out New Icons and Redesign to Android and iPhones

YouTube is rolling out a fresh look for its video player and full app icons on both Android and iOS. The update comes with version 20.42 and brings sweeping visual changes aimed at creating a cleaner and more immersive viewer experience.

The new YouTube design sees all navigation icons updated throughout the app, covering the top bar, bottom bar, and the actual video page. Icons now feature bolder outlines and rounded edges to improve visibility. Inside the video player, controls are less intrusive — in portrait mode the landscape button now appears larger and inside a circle. In landscape mode, action buttons for like, dislike, comment, save, share and overflow sit inside a pill-shaped container at the bottom left, while a redesigned “More videos” button shows up at the bottom right.

When you pause a video, the background no longer darkens, which keeps the screen feeling lighter and less disruptive. There’s also a new animated effect for likes — for example liking a music video may trigger a visual musical note, and sports content may display a corresponding visual cue. The double-tap to skip animation has been refined to feel smaller and smoother so it interferes less with viewing.

Other tweaks focus on user experience: transitions between tabs feel smoother and saving videos to playlists or Watch Later is now simpler and more visual. Comment threads have been repositioned for easier scanning.

If you use YouTube regularly you may notice these changes already. Some may feel small, but putting key controls in more intuitive places and refining animations can boost how natural the app feels. The redesign isn’t just cosmetic — it seeks to smooth out the interaction and reduce distractions so your videos stay front and center.
