WhatsApp is working on a feature that could make your calls sound a lot cleaner. The app is testing built-in noise cancellation for both voice and video calls, and it may not be too far from a wider release.
What Is This Feature?
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is rolling out noise cancellation to a small group of Android beta users. The feature works by detecting and filtering out background noise during calls. So whether you are in a busy café, on a noisy street, or working from home with a fan running nearby, the other person should hear you more clearly.
WhatsApp says the goal is to cut down on distracting background sounds without you having to do anything special. The feature is designed to work automatically once it is enabled.
How Does It Work?
The noise cancellation toggle will appear in your call settings. You can switch it on before or during a call. When it is active, WhatsApp processes the audio on your device and strips out unwanted noise in real time.
This kind of feature is already available in apps like Google Meet and Zoom. WhatsApp bringing it to its platform is a big deal, though. WhatsApp has over two billion users worldwide, and a large chunk of those users rely on it as their primary way to make calls.

Why Does This Matter?
Call quality on WhatsApp has been a common complaint for years. A lot of that comes down to background noise. If you have ever struggled to hear someone on a WhatsApp call because of noise on their end, this feature is aimed directly at solving that problem.
It is also worth noting that messaging apps are increasingly competing on call quality. Samsung recently decided to shut down its own Messages app in the US and redirect users to Google Messages. Apps that do not keep up with communication quality improvements risk losing ground to competitors that do.
