Netflix has updated its Apple TV app, and not everyone is happy about it. The updated version has removed the native tvOS video player and dropped some features that Apple TV users had come to rely on.
The reaction from Apple TV owners has been notably negative.
What Changed in the Netflix Update?
The updated Netflix app on Apple TV no longer uses the native tvOS video player. That might sound technical, but it has real consequences for users.
The native tvOS player supports several Apple-specific features. Things like seamless integration with the Siri remote, continuity playback, and certain accessibility features. By moving away from it, Netflix has effectively cut off some of those integrations.
Some users are also reporting that specific features they used regularly are simply gone from the updated app.
Why Would Netflix Do This?
Netflix has been gradually distancing itself from platform-native features across devices. The company often prefers to build its own unified playback system so that the experience is consistent across every platform — whether you are on a smart TV, a game console, or a phone.
From Netflix’s perspective, this gives them more control. From the user’s perspective, it can feel like a step backward — especially on Apple TV, where the native tvOS player is generally excellent.
Why Does This Matter for Apple TV Owners?
Apple TV is already in a frustrating position. The current Apple TV 4K is running an A15 chip from 2021, and the long-awaited hardware refresh has been delayed yet again. We covered that delay in detail here: Apple TV Refresh Is Now Delayed Until September 2026 Here Is Why.
For users already waiting on new hardware, losing features from the most popular streaming app on the platform makes the wait feel even longer.
Can You Do Anything About It?
Unfortunately, no. The update has already rolled out. There is no option in the app to revert to the previous player.
If you use Netflix heavily on your Apple TV, the best option right now is to provide feedback directly to Netflix through the app or its support channels. Enough user pushback has caused companies to reverse decisions like this before.
In the meantime, other streaming apps on Apple TV continue to use the native tvOS player without issue.
