If you are planning to buy the iPhone Fold at launch, you may need to wait a little longer than expected. New reports suggest that Apple will announce the device at its September 2026 event, but it will not actually ship until December.
This is a split launch strategy — announce now, deliver later.
Why the Delay?
Foldable phones are incredibly difficult to manufacture. The display must fold reliably thousands of times. The hinge must be durable without adding too much bulk. And every component has to fit into a chassis that is just 4.5mm thin when open.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman put it plainly. He said there is “no doubt” the iPhone Fold will arrive a little later than the iPhone 18 Pro models. The main culprit is the production complexity of the folding display itself.
Barclays analyst Tim Long is even more specific. He has said he does not expect the iPhone Fold to reach customers until December 2026.
Has Apple Done This Before?
Yes. Apple used a similar strategy with the iPhone X back in 2017. The device was announced in September but did not ship until November. The extra lead time allowed Apple to ramp up production while managing demand.
A December launch would position the iPhone Fold as a premium holiday product. That is not a bad place to be. It also gives Apple time to build up inventory before the inevitable surge of orders.
What Should You Expect?
The iPhone Fold is shaping up to be Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever. Reports suggest pricing will start around $2,000 for the base model. That makes planning ahead important for anyone who wants one.
Apple is holding a lot of its biggest announcements for later this year. The new Siri, several smart home devices, and now the iPhone Fold are all scheduled for the fall. You can read more about what else is delayed in our story on Apple TV Refresh Is Now Delayed Until September 2026 Here Is Why.
For those waiting on a software preview, Apple is expected to show iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 in June, which should include optimizations specifically designed for the iPhone Fold’s larger inner display.
