Instagram Adds New “Reposts” and “Location Map” Features

Instagram just rolled out two new features aimed at making your content more shareable and discoverable—and they lean into both social spontaneity and real-world discovery.

First up, Reposts: think of it as Instagram’s take on resharing, but smarter. Any public reel or post you choose to repost shows up in a new Reposts tab on your profile. It’s automatically credited back to the original creator—boosting reach without losing authorship. Users and their followers now get a clean feed of what’s inspired them, all while spotlighting creators in the process.

Next, say hello to the Instagram Map—a chunkier upgrade to location-based browsing. Tag your last active spot and opt into sharing, and your friends can see where you’ve been. Better yet, the map becomes a scannable visual feed of content tagged to interesting locations, making exploration feel more immersive. Privacy is respected too, with full opt-in control, plus the ability to block sharing from specific places or with select people.

Rounding out the changes is the new Friends tab in Reels. Located at the top of the Reels screen, it surfaces public Reels your friends have interacted with—likes, shares, comments—turning your Reels feed into a curated discovery channel based on your social graph.

On the surface, these updates feel casual—resharing content, mapping user activity, seeing what friends are watching. But automatic reposting, combined with a geo-tagged discovery map and more meaningful friend-based content, could reshape how Instagram blends social curation with discovery.

In essence, Instagram is leaning into personalization: not just what you follow, but what your friends like, and where you’ve been. It’s a shift toward a visually layered feed that’s more about your interests, locations, and social circles. If you’re ready to share and explore, these tools are about to make Instagram feel both bigger and more personal.
