Google has today made official a new feature for the Google Phone app. The new “Call Reason” feature will let users know if an incoming call is urgent or not.
With the new feature, users will get a toggle to mark a call to a saved contact as an “urgent” call. This will also show up on the receiver’s incoming call screen to let them know that the call is likely to be something that requires their urgent attention.

You can use the new feature right now if you’re a part of the Google Phone beta, and for users in the stable channel, the update should come to the stable version soon as well. However, seeing as this is Google we’re talking about, we can’t really be certain about it. Google has, in the past, sometimes rolled out new features really quickly, and at other times, it has taken months to complete feature roll-outs.
Still, the new Call Reason feature looks very impressive and useful. Fortunately, Google has restricted the feature such that you can only use it for saved contacts, and not for unknown numbers. This should ensure that spammers can’t mark their calls as urgent using the new feature.
