The brand new iOS 13 update that Apple started rolling out in September mostly stumbled out the gate, but it still saw a huge adoption rate among iPhone users. Probably because of all the new features it brings (including the ability to delete Siri recordings). One of the features that I was really excited about, was the new Reminders app overhaul that it brings. iOS 13 basically makes the default Reminders app a very capable to-do list app that’s already installed on your iPhone. That’s awesome, because as much as I love Todoist for managing my tasks, if the default app gets things done for me, there’s no reason to install a third party replacement, now is there?
What are Lists, and Didn’t These Exist Already?
Among the many improvements in the new Reminders app, there are lists. These sort of existed already, but prior to iOS 13 the Reminders app did such a horrendous job of displaying them that it looked wonky, and I won’t blame you if you never took the time to set up lists on your iPhone before today. With iOS 13 however, things are much better. Lists are displayed clearly, and there’s good reason to start organising your reminders and tasks in lists. If that’s what you’re looking to do, here is how to create a new list in iOS 13’s Reminders app.
How to Create a New List in the Reminders App
If you want to create a new list in Reminders, just follow the steps below:
- Open the Reminders app, and tap on the “Add List” button on the bottom right. You’ll be prompted to enter a new name for the list, along with things like an icon, and a list colour. For the purposes of this tutorial, we’ll create a list called ‘8BitTasks’.
- Once you’re done choosing the icon (glyph) and the colour for your list, just tap on “Done”.
Your list will now show up in the “My Lists” section of the app. Easy, right?
Change the Order of Lists
By default, new lists are added to the bottom of the, well, list. However, if you want to change the order of these lists, all you have to do is tap on the “Edit” button on the top-right of the screen. You can now tap and drag the handle next to the list you want to re-order, and place it wherever you want.
Edit List Names, Colours, and Glyphs
You can also edit the name, colour, and glyphs for lists if you need to by just tapping on the “Edit” button, and then tapping on the “i” button next to the list’s name. This will show you the same screen you get when you’re creating a new list in Reminders, and you can make the changes you want.
Create List Groups in Reminders in iOS 13
For people who are looking to get slightly more organised with their Reminders in iOS 13, there are groups. You can create a new group fairly easily and add lists to it. Here’s how:
- In the Reminders app, tap on “Edit”. Now, tap on “Add Group“.
- Set a name for the group and then tap on “Include”. Here you can choose the lists you want to be included in the group. Once done, just tap “Create“.
The My Lists section in Reminders will now show the group, along with the lists nested underneath it. These can be hidden away from view, or displayed by simply tapping on the group’s name.
Manage Your Tasks and Reminders with Lists in iOS 13
So that was everything you need to know about creating lists in iOS 13’s new Reminders app. Lists are helpful in organising your reminders and tasks in a cleaner manner, so you can focus on the task at hand. You can create lists to separate work tasks from home stuff, and even create a separate list for all the games you wanna buy. Speaking of games, you should check out Apple Arcade as well, it’s pretty cool. Plus, with iOS 13, you can connect a PS4 controller to your iPhone to play games! Pretty cool, right? Anyway, with Reminders and lists, the possibilities are endless, so go ahead, create your own lists in the Reminders app, and manage your work in a more efficient way.
