Apple Music Announces New “Sound Therapy” Feature

Apple has announced a new “Sound Therapy” feature in Apple Music in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG). The new feature, which is available already, is aimed at helping Apple Music users get better focus, relaxation, or sleep with specially engineered sounds.

This isn’t simply white noise or pink noise, etc., which you can find plenty of in YouTube playlists. Apple Music’s Sound Therapy feature takes songs from popular artists like Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, and AURORA, that you already love and enjoy listening to, and blends them with “special sound waves designed to enhance users’ daily routines while retaining the artist’s original vision” as per Apple’s press release (link).

At launch, Sound Therapy features three categories: Sleep, Relax, and Focus. Each category blends different kinds of beats and colored noise with the songs. For example, white noise can help with focusing, whereas pink noise and delta waves can help with sleep.

Toasty Take

The new Sound Therapy feature sure sounds useful. And if you prefer having white noise or pink noise to help you focus or sleep, this is definitely going to turn that into a more enjoyable experience for you.

I do like the idea of blending these specific sound patterns and waves into popular music. That should make for a more involved listening experience. Because personally, I have always found white noise distracting to my work, rather than helping me focus on tasks. Maybe having it blended with songs I like could help. I’ll have to try it out.

What do you think about this new feature? Does it sound like something you’re interested in? Or are you a Spotify listener and don’t care about Apple Music features until they fix their recommendations? Let us know in the comments.
