With WWDC 2025 on the horizon, there’s a lot to be excited about. And one of the things that I am looking forward to is the macOS 16 announcement. So, if you’re a Mac user as well, and you’re excited about the next macOS update, here is everything you need to know about macOS 16.
When Will macOS 16 Be Released
If Apple follows its usual trends for software releases, the timeline for a macOS 16 release date is quite clear. We should see a Developer Beta for macOS 16 shortly after the WWDC 2025 keynote ends, followed by a Public Beta sometime in July.
macOS 16 will likely be released in September 2025, judging by past macOS stable releases. This means you will be able to check out new macOS features as early as June itself. However, I would recommend that you don’t install developer (or even Public) betas on your primary devices.
macOS 16 Name
Every year, Apple has a new name for macOS, and weirdly enough it is always exciting to guess the name for the next iteration of macOS. In fact, among my list of WWDC 2025 expectations is also the bit about Apple’s crack marketing team driving around California to find the perfect name for macOS.
There isn’t a lot of information about what Apple will call macOS 16, but we should get some trustworthy leaks as we get closer to June 9. All we know right now is that the internal codename for macOS 16 is “Cheer”.
macOS 16 Features
macOS 16 is expected to be a fairly major update. Among the many new macOS 16 features are things like a major UI revamp inspired by the visionOS UI. We will also get some more Apple Intelligence features, along with the usual suspects — improvements to the System Preferences and other native apps.
macOS 16 Compatible Devices
As far as supported devices are concerned, most Macs should be compatible with macOS 16. There are reports that Apple will drop support for Intel-based Macs this year, but M-series Macs should be fine. You can check out our list of macOS 16 supported devices to see if your Mac will get the update when we finally reach the macOS 16 release date.
Well, that was pretty much everything you need to know about macOS 16 as of now. Of course, I will be updating this article as we inch closer to WWDC 2025 and more reports and leaks start coming up. In the meantime, let me know how excited you are about macOS 16 in the comments.
