At its I/O 2025 keynote, Google announced that it’s bringing the ability to share a live feed of your camera with Search. This announcement comes on the heels of another announcement regarding Gemini Live’s availability on iOS.
Google announced that Gemini Live is getting some updates on iOS, and iPhone users can now start sharing their iPhone screen, or camera feed with the Gemini app and ask about things in the real-world by simply pointing their camera towards them. This includes use-cases such as asking for food ideas based on the ingredients in your refrigerator, or trying to get help with your homework.
In a similar vein, the company announced that this camera-sharing ability is also coming to Search later this year. With the new feature, dubbed Live Search, users will be able to share what their camera is seeing and ask questions about what’s around them.
Sharing your camera feed with Search can be quite a powerful experience, especially since Google Search will be able to understand what’s around you, and offer customized help based on that information. This can come in handy whether you’re trying to cook something new, solve a difficult question, or trying to install an aftermarket car part by yourself.
While camera sharing in Search is coming later this year as a Labs feature, screen and camera sharing with Gemini is available on iOS right away. What’s more, the company has decided to keep the features free on iPhone as well.
Toasty Take
Ever since I first used Google Lens back in 2017, I’ve had an inkling of Google’s ideas with Visual search. As good as Lens is with seeing visual information and returning back answers to things you ask of it, it’s the obvious next step to add kind of a capability into a real-time, ongoing back-and-forth kind of conversation with Search itself.
Judging by the excellent results I’ve always had with Lens, I’m very excited to see how Search improves with the option to share my camera feed and ask questions directly about things around me.
Also, just as it is with most Google roll-outs, the Gemini Live update on iOS also looks to be a staggered roll-out. Google says the update is rolling out starting May 20, 2025. However, as of this writing, the feature is not available for me on iPhone.
Well, what do you think about Gemini Live and Live Search? Let me know in the comments.
