iPhones normally don’t change too much in terms of their design and functionality. After all, every iPhone since the iPhone 11 has been pretty much similar in terms of design.
The last time Apple made a major change to the way an iPhone looks and feels was the iPhone X — the 10th anniversary of the 2007 iPhone launch.
Well, we’re now approaching the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, and of course Apple has to be planning something big.
According to a new report by ETNews (link), Apple is planning on using four-edge bending display technology for the 20th anniversary iPhone. This means that the display would curve on all four sides, giving the iPhone a truly bezel-less appearance.
The possibility of a bezel-less iPhone is also corroborated by reports from Bloomberg (link), as well as from The Information (link), both of which had similar claims about a truly edge-to-edge display on at least one iPhone model in 2027.
Other rumors about the 20th anniversary iPhone talk about under-display sensors, under-display cameras, and more. Of course, all of those will be necessary if the 2027 iPhone is truly going to have no bezels. It’s also noteworthy that multiple reports have already claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in 2026 will have under-display Face ID tech already.
Toasty Take
The idea of a bezel-less iPhone is very exciting. And of course, ever since those first few patent-filings of an iPhone with the display extending on all four sides came out years and years ago, this possibility has intrigued me.
That said, getting a bezel-less iPhone production ready and in the hands of consumers will undoubtedly be a major challenge for Apple. The company needs to get the display technology, it needs to figure out how to place all the sensors, cameras, and Face ID tech, and it needs to make the design durable enough to withstand some careless handling.
Still, considering the iPhone X made such huge waves when it released, the 20th anniversary iPhone seems to be on a path to make an even larger splash in the industry.
