For the first time in almost a decade, Google has updated its “G” logo. The last time Google made a change to its logo was in 2015, when the company switched from a serif to a sans-serif font, giving the logo a modern look.
The change, which was originally limited to iPhones, is on the “G” logo that appears in the Google app icon. The new icon features the red, yellow, green, and blue of the logo blending together into a gradient. Currently, the Google app on Android has also started showing the new logo with the app version 16.18 (beta).

None of the other Google apps have any new logos as of this writing (believe me, I updated and checked). However, that may (or may not) change as well. At least for apps like Maps, Chrome, and Google Home, it should be a subtle change if the colors there were to blend-in as well.
Also noteworthy is the fact that while the “G” logo has this new gradient, the full Google logo remains unchanged, and as of right now, the favicon on the Google website is the old “G” logo as well. That, however, could also be a matter of time, because the Google Brand Resource Center (link) still shows the old “G” logo on its list of logos.
Toasty Take (8BitToast’s Opinion)
While I like the new logo with the gradient and the blending of colors, I’m unsure if this was exactly necessary. The old G logo was doing just fine, and looked a bit better (but maybe that’s just because I got used to it in 10 years of looking at it every single day).
I’m also not sure why only the Google app would get updated with a new gradient-y icon. I have half a mind to add new icons to my Google I/O 2025 expectations. What do you think? Will Google run a blending brush over the rest of its icons as well? Share your thoughts in the comments.
