Android 17 Beta 3 Has Arrived — And It Finally Delivers Desktop Multitasking

Google has released Android 17 Beta 3, and it includes the feature Android power users have been waiting months for: desktop multitasking. The update brings a proper desktop mode experience to Android, arriving just weeks before Google I/O 2026, where Android 17 is expected to be a centerpiece.

Desktop multitasking in Android 17 allows users to run apps in floating, resizable windows when connected to an external display — a capability that has existed in limited forms for years but has never received the full treatment it deserves. Beta 3 appears to be the version where Google is finally committing to making it work properly.

What Is New in Beta 3?

The main headline is desktop multitasking, but Beta 3 likely also carries stability improvements and bug fixes across the Android 17 feature set, which has been building since the first developer preview dropped earlier this year.

Android 17 is a major release. Google’s full Google I/O 2026 sessions list has already been previewed and includes a 45-minute deep dive into Android 17’s new capabilities — covering performance upgrades, agentic AI features, and the platform’s expanded reach across phones, cars, TVs, and extended reality devices through what Google is calling “Adaptive Everywhere.”

Desktop multitasking fits squarely into that vision. If Android can function credibly as a desktop operating system when connected to a monitor, the line between mobile and traditional computing blurs significantly — something Google has been pushing toward with ChromeOS integration and, now, Android itself.

What About AI?

AI is woven throughout Android 17. Google Gemini Nano 4 is also coming to Android, bringing an upgraded on-device model that enables faster, more capable AI features without requiring a cloud connection. That ties directly into Android 17’s agentic AI ambitions, where the operating system can proactively take actions on your behalf without you explicitly asking for them.

When Does Android 17 Launch?

A stable release is expected later in 2026, likely following the conclusion of the beta program after Google I/O. Pixel devices will be first in line, followed by Samsung, OnePlus, and other Android manufacturers. If you are running a Pixel phone and want to try Beta 3 now, it is available through the Android Beta Program.

One thing to keep in mind: a recent update caused serious problems for some Pixel phones, so as always, it is worth waiting a few days after a beta drops before installing on a primary device.
