Gemini Is Now Built Into Chrome in India

Google has officially rolled out Gemini in Chrome to India, Canada, and New Zealand, bringing the AI browsing assistant to millions of new users for the first time. The rollout also adds support for more than 50 new languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Spanish, making Gemini in Chrome accessible in most major Indian languages for the first time.

The expansion uses Gemini 3.1 and is currently available on desktop Chrome and iOS. On Android, you can activate Gemini by holding the power button while using Chrome or any other compatible app.

What Is Gemini in Chrome?

Gemini in Chrome is Google’s built-in AI assistant for the browser. Instead of opening a new tab to use Gemini or switching to the Gemini app, you can chat with the AI directly inside a side panel while staying on the page you are already viewing. It was launched in the US last September as a floating window and updated to a side panel interface in January 2026. India, Canada, and New Zealand are the first countries outside the US to receive the feature.

What Can Gemini in Chrome Do?

Once you activate the Gemini panel by clicking the sparkle icon in the top-right corner of your browser, here is what you can ask it to do.

You can ask Gemini to summarise the article or webpage currently open in your tab, explain a concept from the page in simpler terms, create a quiz from the content to test your understanding, or draft an email based on something you are reading. The assistant understands the context of your current page, so you do not need to copy and paste text into it.

Multi-tab awareness is also available. Gemini in Chrome can read up to 10 of your open tabs simultaneously, so you can ask it to compare products across multiple shopping pages, summarise different perspectives from several news articles, or consolidate research from different sources into a single answer.

Gemini in Chrome integrates directly with your Google apps. From the side panel, it can pull information from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Drive, and YouTube. You can ask it to find a meeting on your calendar, look up directions to a location mentioned on a webpage, or pull a file from Drive without opening a new tab.

Nano Banana 2, Google’s in-browser image editing tool, is also built into Gemini in Chrome. You can type a prompt to transform or edit an image that appears on a page you are viewing, without uploading the image to a separate tool.

What Is Not Available in India Yet

The agentic “auto browse” feature, which allows Gemini to navigate websites and complete tasks on your behalf automatically, remains exclusive to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the United States for now. It is not part of this international rollout. Indian users will get the conversational features and connected app integrations, but not the autonomous web browsing capability.

Additionally, the Chrome 146 feature that will let Gemini access files from your Google Drive as browsing context has not yet launched anywhere. It was mentioned in Chrome 145 release notes as coming soon.

How to Access Gemini in Chrome Right Now

Make sure you are running the latest version of Chrome on your desktop, Mac, or Windows PC. Chrome 145 is the version that carries the India rollout.

Once updated, look for the Gemini sparkle icon in the top-right corner of your browser toolbar, to the right of the address bar. If you do not see it, click the puzzle piece extensions icon and check whether the Gemini icon is pinned. You must be signed into a Google account to use it, and you must be 18 or older.

On iOS, update the Chrome app to the latest version from the App Store and sign into your Google account. The Gemini icon will appear in the same top-right position as on desktop.

Google says more capabilities, regions, and languages are planned throughout the rest of 2026.
