Apple’s F1 Film Won an Oscar Last Night — And a Sequel Is Already in the Works

Apple added another Academy Award to its collection last night. At the 98th Annual Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on March 15, Apple’s original film “F1” won the Oscar for Best Sound. The win comes on the back of a record-breaking theatrical run and a string of awards across the industry this season.

What the Win Means

The Best Sound win is the latest honor for “F1” following its run as the highest-grossing sports feature film of all time. Alongside four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, the film had already won Best Editing and Best Sound at the Critics Choice Awards, Best Sound at the BAFTA Film Awards, and awards from the Cinema Audio Society, Visual Effects Society, British Film Designers Guild, and others.

The film stars Brad Pitt as a former Formula 1 driver who makes a comeback after a career-ending crash, partnering with a younger driver to save a struggling team. The Best Picture award at this year’s ceremony ultimately went to Warner Bros’ One Battle After Another, which led the night with six wins.

Apple’s Growing Oscar Track Record

Apple has been collecting Academy Awards at an impressive pace since launching Apple TV+ in 2019. In 2022, “CODA” became the first streaming film to win Best Picture, with Troy Kotsur becoming the first Deaf male actor to win Best Supporting Actor. In 2023, “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” won Best Animated Short Film.

Apple also received a Best Documentary nomination last night for “Come See Me in the Good Light.”

A Sequel Is Already Being Planned

Director Joseph Kosinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Lewis Hamilton have all confirmed early discussions about a sequel. “We are already working on the first script,” Hamilton said. “We had our first meeting at the end of the year — me, Jerry and Joe — talking about different ideas.”

“F1” is now streaming globally on Apple TV+.
