Meta is Shutting Down the Messenger Website

Meta is officially retiring the standalone Messenger.com website, with plans to discontinue its use as a browser-based chat service starting April 2026. After that point, anyone attempting to send or receive messages via that separate site will be automatically sent to facebook.com/messages instead, meaning the main Facebook web interface becomes the default way to chat on a computer.

This change follows a series of adjustments Meta has been making to how people access Messenger on non-mobile devices. Standalone desktop applications for both Windows and macOS were already pulled earlier, and users were directed to web-based access through Facebook. The removal of Messenger.com completes this transition away from the service’s own web presence.

Importantly, Messenger itself is not going away — the mobile apps on Android and iOS will continue working as usual, and conversations can still be maintained there. What’s changing is simply the entry point for desktop web users: instead of logging into a minimalist chat-focused page, you’ll now enter via the full Facebook site.

For some users, particularly those who previously used Messenger independently of a Facebook account, this shift means they’ll need to rely on the mobile app if they want to keep chatting without logging into Facebook on a browser. Chat history and message continuity aren’t being deleted, but the access method is being streamlined.

Overall, this move reflects Meta’s broader effort to simplify its messaging infrastructure, reducing the number of separate platforms it maintains and unifying the experience through its flagship social network.

If you rely on Messenger for desktop communication, it’s wise to prepare for the April change by planning to use Facebook’s web messaging interface before the old link stops working.
