Google Docs is getting a new feature that could quietly change the way people interact with written content. Instead of scanning long reports or meeting notes line by line, users will now have the option to simply listen to a spoken overview of their documents.
The update introduces audio summaries powered by Google’s Gemini AI. Once available, users can head to the Tools menu in Docs and select a new option that generates a brief spoken breakdown of the document’s contents. This verbal summary is designed to highlight key ideas across the file, even when information is spread across multiple tabs.
Rather than reading out the entire text word for word, the system produces a condensed explanation that usually runs for just a few minutes. The idea is to help users understand the main points quickly, whether they are reviewing project notes, catching up before a meeting, or trying to grasp the essence of a lengthy report. Google says the summaries are delivered in a natural-sounding voice to make the experience feel more like listening than studying.

Playback controls are also included, allowing listeners to adjust the speed from slower narration to faster delivery depending on their preference. Different voice styles can be selected as well, ranging from a straightforward narrator to more persuasive or coaching tones.
The rollout began on February 12, 2026, though it may take some time before it becomes visible to all eligible Workspace users.
By adding an option to turn summaries into audio, Google is clearly aiming to make document consumption more flexible. As work increasingly moves between screens, meetings, and multitasking environments, being able to absorb information without having to stare at text may prove useful for productivity across a wide range of professional settings.
