Apple Might Start Assembling iPhone Chips in India Soon

After moving a substantial chunk of its iPhone manufacturing efforts to India, Apple seems to be in early talks to start assembling iPhone chips in India as well.

As per a report from Economic Times, the company is in talks with India-based CG Semi to manufacture chips for its devices. Though it is currently unclear which chips Apple will outsource to India, but sources stated to ET that it will likely be display chips.

Currently, Apple relies on companies that have manufacturing facilities based in China for its display chips, and it is likely that this move is yet another step in Apple’s attempts at reducing its dependence on China for critical components,

The Economic Times report further mentions that “this may be the “beginning of an uphill climb” for CG Semi since if talks progress, it will have to pass Apple’s stringent quality standards to clinch the deal.”

Obviously, since the talks are in their preliminary stages, things could go either way. However, if Apple finalizes a partnership with CG Semi, it will be an important milestone in the government’s India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem within the country.
