Instagram has finally arrived on the iPad with a dedicated app designed to shine on larger screens. For years, iPad users had to rely on a stretched version of the iPhone app, which was blurry and lacked key features. Now, that changes.
Open the new app and you are dropped straight into the Reels feed, signaling Instagram’s bet on short-form video entertainment. Videos autoplay in full-screen like the mobile app but look better and feel more immersive. At the same time Instagram is leaning into Reels as its most-used feature, it is also giving users more control over what they see.
If you prefer the classic photo feed, there is a Following tab that lets you toggle between recommended posts, content from mutual followers, or a chronological layout. You can also reorder those views to prioritize what matters to you.
The app includes nice touches for navigation. Messages and notifications appear in a split view, making it easy to chat or browse without constant tapping. Comments also overlay next to Reels without interrupting playback. It feels smooth, considered, and tailor-made for the iPad.
Instagram made the app available globally on day one. All iPads running iPadOS 15.1 and up are supported. And Android tablet users do not miss out for long either. An optimized version is reportedly in development.
Bottom line: Instagram’s new iPad app fixes years of frustration and brings Reels front and center in a smart and graceful way. If you have been waiting for better iPad support, this launch is worth celebrating.
