Google is Bringing AI Mode to the Android Search Widget

Google is expanding its AI Mode shortcut beyond Pixel phones, embedding it directly into the Google Search widget on Android homescreens. Now rolling out widely with Google app version 16.28, it places a new circular AI Mode icon to the right of the voice and Lens buttons—no beta or Developer access needed.

Setting it up couldn’t be simpler. Just long-press the Search widget, open Customize, and find “AI Mode” as the second shortcut option in the grid. You can also tweak theme and transparency settings to match your setup. For users not on Pixel launchers, the Google widget becomes the quickest path to invoke AI Mode from your home screen.

When you tap the icon, it launches the full-screen AI Mode interface immediately, letting you type a prompt—just like a standard search but powered by AI directly. It’s a faster, smoother way to jump into generative search tools without navigating through the app itself.

This rollout follows earlier experiences where AI Mode shortcut availability was inconsistent—appearing for some users and vanishing for others. Now, the option is widely available across both beta and stable channel users, marking Google’s push to make AI-driven search tools feel native and omnipresent.

What stands out here is how the integration feels intentional yet unobtrusive. The AI Mode icon is prominently placed, but it doesn’t clutter the widget layout—keeping the interface sleek while still inviting exploration of AI features. And giving users control over its appearance and transparency shows attention to flexibility.

At its core, this change accelerates the shift toward AI-powered search. Whether you’re triggering the feature from a dedicated hardware shortcut or the widget, the goal is the same: make AI Mode as accessible, immediate, and fluid as traditional search.
