How to Use YouTube in Background for Free on iPhone with iOS 14

Playing YouTube in background is something that almost everyone wants to have. However, right now the only way you can do that is if you pay for YouTube Premium. That’s fine, but a feature such as this shouldn’t be hidden away behind a paywall. Fortunately, iOS 14 brings a neat workaround that lets you play YouTube in the background in your iPhone without paying for YouTube Premium. It’s a neat trick, so check it out.

How to Play YouTube in Background in iOS 14

Obviously, you need to be running iOS 14 on your iPhone. If you’re not, you can first ensure that your iPhone is compatible with iOS 14 or not, and then install iOS 14 on your iPhone right now. If you already are using iOS 14, just follow the steps below.

  • Open the YouTube website in Safari on your iPhone. Search for whatever video you want to play in the background.
  • Start playing the video, and go into full screen mode by tapping this button.

  • Now, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go home. You will see that the video keeps playing in the Picture-in-Picture mode in iOS 14.

  • Nice, but this video will keep playing on top of whatever you’re doing, which can be annoying if you just wanted to listen to a song and not watch its video. Well, just swipe away the PIP window to the right side of the screen and it will get hidden.

Pretty cool, right? Now you can continue using whichever apps you want to use while listening to your favourite songs on YouTube. Do keep in mind that the video (and audio) playback will stop if you lock your iPhone. That’s just how it is.

Easily Play YouTube in Background without Premium

I have nothing against people paying for YouTube. However, as I mentioned above, it’s rather annoying that YouTube wants to force people to pay even for a tiny feature such as background playback. With this neat trick, I can easily listen to YouTube in the background while texting my friends, or reading something on the web using my iPhone. So, what do you think of this trick? Do you like it? Or would you rather just pay for YouTube Premium? Let me know in the comments below. Apart from this, there are a lot of other neat iOS 14 features you should check out including sound recognition, improved Files app, and more.
