Popular video streaming service Netflix has obtained exclusive streaming rights to Pokémon episodes. With the deal, Netflix will now be the streaming home for all future Pokémon episodes in the United States.
What this means, essentially, is that you’ll be able to watch the first 12 episodes of ‘Pokémon Journeys: The Series’ on Netflix from June 12, 2020. Future episodes will be added to the streaming platform in a quarterly basis for the rest of the season. For the uninitiated, Pokemon Journeys: The Series is the 23rd season of the iconic and hugely popular anime series which spawned its very own AR game — Pokemon Go back in 2016.
In a press release regarding the deal with Netflix, Emily Arons, SVP International Business at The Pokémon Company said, “With their tremendous reach and ability for fans to enjoy content anytime and anywhere, Netflix is the ideal partner to premiere new episodes of the beloved animated Pokémon series in the US.”
It’s not really a secret that Netflix wants to be the go to for kids and family content, both in the US and globally. The company now has to fight for its place against the likes of Disney+ which has a huge catalog of immediately recognisable kid-friendly content readily available to it. However, Netflix still remains one of the first places people look for content, and that’s a position that thee company intends to keep. The streaming service is also heavily invested in creating more kids’ and family oriented content. CEO, Reed Hastings said in a recent earning’s call “are we kicking up our kids and family content, and animation? You bet.”
