How to Delete Facebook Account

Once the most popular social media platform in the world, Facebook has, in recent days, fallen from grace into a highly untrusted place to share or save your memories in. That’s thanks to the company’s track record with user privacy over the last few years with scandals like the Cambridge Analytica issue, the company harvesting two-factor authentication phone numbers for advertising purposes, and more. So, if you’re thinking of deleting your Facebook account to avoid potential future data breaches and privacy malpractices, here’s how to delete Facebook accounts.

How to Deactivate Facebook Account

If the only reason you’re considering deleting your account is to take a break from Facebook, you should definitely consider deactivating your FB account instead of permanently deleting it. This way, you’ll be able to get back into Facebook when you are done with your break, and you won’t end up losing all your Facebook memories, posts, and photos.

Deactivating a Facebook account is easy too. It’s pretty much all the same steps as deleting an FB account. Here’s how you can do it.

If you’re using Facebook on a desktop or iMac, here’s how to deactivate your account on the web.

  • Log into the Facebook website, and click on the arrow on the top-right of the page.

That’s it, you’ve successfully deactivated your Facebook account. It’s pretty simple, although it’s obvious that Facebook has buried it inside obscure menus so people can’t really find it very easily.

Note: When you deactivate your Facebook account, your Facebook Messenger account remains active. If you want to deactivate that as well, you’ll have to do it separately. We’ll cover that in a dedicated section.

How to Deactivate Facebook Messenger

Like I mentioned above, when you deactivate your Facebook account, the Messenger remains active. If that’s not something you want, and you need a complete break from Facebook in your life, you can deactivate Messenger separately.

Note: Keep in mind that you can only deactivate Messenger if you’ve already deactivated your FB account. Also, you can only deactivate Messenger from its mobile apps on Android and iOS.

  • In the Messenger app, tap on your profile picture in the top left of the screen.
  • Scroll down and tap on “Legal & Policies” and then tap on “Deactivate”.

That’s it, you’ve successfully deactivated Facebook Messenger as well. Keep in mind that the deactivate option will only show up if your FB account has been deactivated.

How to Reactivate Facebook Account

If you’ve deactivated your account, or even if you have permanently deleted it, you can get your account back pretty easily. However, keep in mind that if you’ve permanently deleted your account, you can only gain access within 30 days of deleting the account. After that, your account will be gone forever.

To reactivate your FB account, all you need to do is sign in to Facebook with your FB email and password, and you’ll be back on Facebook right where you left off.

Use Digital Wellbeing to Limit Facebook Use

Now that we’ve discussed how you can delete or deactivate an FB account, here’s a question for you: is the reason behind your decision to delete/deactivate your Facebook account simply the fact that you’re spending too much time on the platform? If that’s the case, you don’t necessarily have to quit Facebook cold turkey, instead, you can limit your Facebook use with things like Digital Wellbeing.

With Digital Wellbeing, you can set up app time limits on the Facebook app, so your phone will not let you use the Facebook app after you’ve used it for a time specified by you.

Using Digital Wellbeing is fairly straightforward, but we have a dedicated article on how to set up app time limits with Digital Wellbeing that you can check out for a detailed, step-by-step guide on the same.

Use Screen Time to Limit Facebook Use

If you’re an iPhone user and you are looking for an app to limit Facebook use, you can simply use the built-in Screen Time feature to control your Facebook usage. With Screen Time, you can set a time limit on any app (including Facebook) and your iPhone will try to actively prevent you from using Facebook once the specified time has been used up.

Using Screen Time is simple, but we have a dedicated article on how to set up app time limits on iPhone with Screen Time that you can check out for a detailed, step-by-step guide.

Use Facebook’s Built-in Tool to Limit Use

The Facebook app also comes with a tool built right in to help you control your usage of the app. So if you don’t have Digital Wellbeing, or you don’t want to use it or Screen Time to control your Facebook usage, you can check this built-in feature on the Facebook app as well. Here’s how to use it:

  • In the Facebook app, tap on the hamburger menu, and then tap on “Settings and Privacy”. Here, tap on “Your Time on Facebook”. You will now get to see the amount of time you’ve spent on Facebook today, and the amount of time you spent on Facebook over the last week.
  • Tap on “Set Daily Time Reminder”, and then set the time limit you want.

That’s it, the Facebook app will now send you a reminder when you’ve exhausted the time limit for your Facebook use for the day. However, Facebook simply sends a reminder and you can just tap on OK and continue using Facebook as long as you’d like. That’s not really very helpful for most people who are addicted to using Facebook all the time. Personally, I’d recommend you to set time limits using Digital Wellbeing or Screen Time as mentioned above, or use a third party app from the ones mentioned below.

Use Third Party Apps to Control Facebook Usage

If you’re an Android user but you don’t have access to Digital Wellbeing for any of the various reasons that that is possible, fret not, because there are a lot of third party apps on Android that can serve the same (or similar) purposes. Here are three of our favourites Digital Wellbeing alternatives that you can try out.

1. Stay Focused

Stay Focused is a great Digital Wellbeing like app that brings almost all the features of Digital Wellbeing (barring some that need system level privileges). What’s most important to us about this app however, is the fact that it allows users to set time limits on apps in order to control their smartphone usage.

With Stay Focused, you can block Facebook after you’ve used it for a specified amount of time, or you can simply block notifications from the app so you’re not tempted to open it every few minutes. Either way, Stay Focused can help you control your Facebook usage.

2. Your Hour

Your Hour is another app like Digital Wellbeing which brings an overview of your phone usage throughout the day so you can get a quick bird’s eye view of how you use your phone. The app also lets you set time limits on other apps, so you can use it to restrict your Facebook usage easily. Apart from that, Your Hour brings daily and weekly reports of your phone usage patterns. It’s a pretty handy app, and apart from limiting Facebook use, it can also help you balance your phone usage.

3. AppDetox

Yet another app you should check out for controlling your Facebook use is AppDetox. This app lets you limit your usage of apps based on not only the amount of time you’ve spent on the app, but also by the time of the day. So you can easily block Facebook while you’re at work or in school. Plus, you can also block Facebook late at night so you don’t stay up too late just browsing through the endless feed on the app.

Obviously, you can set up time limits using this app, so if that’s what you want, AppDetox has you covered there as well.
