Using a gamepad to play games on your Mac is a definite step-up, especially if you’re using one of the new MacBooks with their Butterfly keyboards. Plus, there are some games that are just better with a gamepad than a keyboard — you know, most racing and sports games, for example. Well, if you are wondering whether you can connect a PlayStation 4 DualShock controller to your Mac and play games, fortunately the answer is yes. Even better, there are two ways you can go about this, depending on your preference. So here’s how to connect a PS4 controller to Mac.
How to Connect PS4 Controller to Mac using Bluetooth
The first, and probably the most preferred way to connect a PlayStation 4 controller with your Mac is to just use Bluetooth. The process is fairly straightforward, and is actually very similar to how you’d connect a PS4 controller to your iPhone, but that’s a separate article you can check out if you’re interested. Here’s what you need to do to hook up your PlayStation controller with macOS:
- First, you’ll need to put the PS4 controller into pairing mode. To do this, press and hold the PS button and the Share button on your controller at the same time until the light-bar on the controller starts flashing.
- On your Mac, head over to Bluetooth Preferences from System Preferences, or from the menu bar.
- Here, you should see “DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller” in the list of available devices. Just click on “Connect“.
That’s it, you’re ready to go and play all the games you’ve been itching to play with a controller on your Mac.
How to Connect PS4 Controller to Mac using microUSB
Another way to go about connecting your DualShock 4 controller to Mac is by using a microUSB cable. This method is also very simple, but you’ll end up with a wired connection between your controller and your Mac, which is just a hassle. Still, if you’re interested, all you have to do is connect the controller with your Mac using a microUSB cable and then power on your controller by pressing the PS button.
It should be ready to go now, but you can double check by following the steps below:
- Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar, and click on “About This Mac“
- Here, click on System Report.
- Now choose “USB”
If you can see “Wireless Controller” mentioned in there, your PS4 controller is all set to be used with your Mac. Weirdly enough, it’s still called a “Wireless Controller” even though it’s clearly connected with a wire, but that’s not important to us.

Connect a PlayStation Controller with Mac and Enjoy Your Games
So those were the two ways you can use to connect a PlayStation 4 controller with your Mac. Plus, connecting a DualShock 4 controller to your Mac is even more useful now with the launch of Apple Arcade on macOS Catalina. If you’ve not tried Arcade on your Mac yet, you definitely should. We have a handy article on how to download macOS Catalina so you have no problems getting the latest version of macOS running on your system.
Other than that, you should also check out Steam because it has support for DualShock controllers on Mac games, so any game that supports gamepad on Steam will work flawlessly on your Mac with a PS4 controller, which is great.
